RailTopoModel® Wiki

RailTopoModel project was initiated on 2013 by 4 Infrastructure Managers sharing the need for a common language to support the cross-domains projects and processes. Two main examples for such digital continuity:

  • Capacity planning and Maintenance works on network: implement a common language between Capacity and Maintenance departments to foster agility in re-planning of works.
  • ETCS Projects, IM and Industrial partners require high level accuracy on their data exchange for network description, including network topology and geometry, for programming of beacons.

On April 2016, UIC and 12 Infrastructure Managers and Manufacturers involved in the projects published the first IRS version for Network Description, with the RTM UML model for such a common language, including:

The main milestones of the RTM project toward digital continuity with other projects:
2017: Eulynx project, decided to take RTM as foundation for its own model for data preparation, and started a fruitful collaboration with RTM Project (e.g. Route model).
January 2018, at launching of IFC Rail Project for BIM activities, the stakeholders re-affirmed their willingness to implement the digital continuity from Design-Construction to Operation, and decided to collaborate with both RTM and Eulynx projects.
September 2018: first meeting between the RTM stakeholders and S²R CDM project led to the current cooperation between Manufacturers and IMs for an optimal integration of digital standards.
March 2019: stakeholders and project leaders of all sectorial projects for digital standardisation, decided to cooperate to the design and publishing of a Common Railway Digital Dictionary, the corner stone for implementing digital continuity between standards, OntoRail project.

Positioning and Vision for RailTopoModel:

RTM project was initially launched as an enabler for cross domain interoperability. RTM do not intend to be the expert model in any specific railway domain or specific business process. As example, Eulynx is the expert model for Signalling domain, and IFC for definition of Geometry. The main focus for RTM model is about a common language for functional dimensions to be used at high level for interoperability. The extension and positioning of RTM should progressively lead to an extended System of Systems functional model. The precise positioning of RTM and other projects, and relatively to each other’s for complementarity and continuity, will be one output of the S²R CDM project to fill such chart (proposal to be challenged for consensus):
